I Tested The Top 5 Turmeric Dark Spot Masks For 8 Weeks. Only One Stayed

Do these overnight kojic acid and turmeric masks really soften the look of dark spots and sun spots? And if any of them do, which one is worth sleeping in night after night? I tested them on my own face for weeks, and here is what I found.

"Read This BEFORE You Book Another Laser Session Or Buy Another Spot Serum. I'm Sharing My Own Results!"

The five turmeric dark spot masks I tested, lined up together

Why are so many women skipping pricey laser sessions and prescription creams to work on their dark spots at home while they sleep?

Dark spots build up quietly over years of sun, hormones and old breakouts, and your face is usually where they land first. Mine are sun spots across both cheekbones from years of running outside with no sunscreen, plus a shadow above my upper lip that showed up in my late 30s.

For years, doing something about spots like these meant an appointment and a serious bill. Laser and IPL sessions sold in packages. Chemical peels that leave you red and flaking for days. Prescription fade creams that can be harsh on reactive skin. It adds up fast, and so does the downtime.

So the women I know started doing it at home. Spot serums and correctors came first, and most end up on the pillowcase by midnight. Then the overnight wrapping masks went viral: a gold gel you brush on, sleep in and peel off by morning. The category has exploded, and most of it is noise.

I'm a beauty editor who buys her own test products, so I do this the slow, unglamorous way. Over the past several months I bought the five turmeric dark spot masks readers kept asking me about with my own money, used every one at night on my own face, and tracked what changed week by week.

A couple of them did very little for my spots. One stung the second it touched my cheeks. And one did exactly what it said on the tube.

Below is the full ranking, the claims I could back up, and my own before-and-after photos. You probably want the answer first, so I'll start with the winner.

Here is my number one pick, straight to the point.

🏅 Winner: The Quia Turmeric & Kojic Acid Overnight Mask

My first night, I brushed a thin layer over my face after my serum, kept clear of my brows, eyes and lips, and read in bed for the 15 minutes it takes to set. The Quia Turmeric & Kojic Acid Overnight Mask dries into a thin clear film I forgot about by the time I turned the light off. I slept in it, and at 6 a.m. I peeled the whole thing off in one piece. Weirdly satisfying.

Here's what you're paying for. It's a clear golden wrapping mask in a 75 ml gold squeeze tube, made in Korea, and it comes with a free applicator brush. Quia's whole argument is that most spot serums and correctors rub off within a couple of hours, long before they do much. This film keeps the actives sitting on your skin for the full 8 hours you sleep. That made sense to me the second I read it.

The two names on the tube do most of the work. Kojic acid helps slow the melanin that dark spots are made of, so it handles the fading. Turmeric calms the look of redness and brings back a warm brightness.

Four more sit behind them. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that takes the dull, gray edge off tired skin. Niacinamide evens the look of tone and supports a calmer barrier. Hydrolyzed collagen is there for hydration, so your face feels smoother and softer in the morning. Adenosine supports overnight renewal. The formula comes from Dr. Hana Lee, MD, a dermatologist and Quia's co-founder who says she spent 15 years treating dark spots, and it's dermatologically tested.

Quia reports that in an 8-week independent customer panel of 845 women, 88.1% saw brighter, fresher skin in the first week, 73.7% saw a more even tone by week 3, and 81.8% saw dark spots look softer by week 6. My face followed the same order. Brighter the first morning, a more even tone in the first couple of weeks, and by about week 6 the spots on my cheekbones looked visibly softer. The shadow above my lip is taking the longest.

Now the price. One tube is $59.95 and lasts about a month of nightly use. The better buy is Buy 1, Get 1 Free, which gets you 2 tubes for $59.95, so $29.98 a tube. That's real money, and I've spent more than that on spot serums that ended up in the bin. It holds a 4.8 rating from 13,851 reviews, and US delivery takes 1-3 business days. Mine showed up on time.

It's gentle, too. My cheeks turn pink if a strong acid so much as looks at them, and this never stung once. Quia says to patch test on your jaw for one night first, which I did, and to skip retinol or acid treatments on mask nights. Do both.

You do have to stay consistent, and you need SPF every morning or the sun undoes the work. Once my tone evened out I dropped to a few nights a week, which Quia says is what most women do.

Me brushing the Quia mask on before bed

That's me brushing it on before bed. The routine is genuinely easy: cleanse, put on your serum, brush a thin layer everywhere except your brows, eyes and lips, wait 15 minutes, then go to sleep. In the morning you peel it off, rinse if you like, and put on SPF. I used it every night at first, then dropped to a few nights a week.

The before-and-after photos further down are after eight weeks. The change on my cheekbones is the one I notice most. Those sun spots look softer in every weekly photo, and the skin around them looks more even.

When the order arrives you get the tube, a free applicator brush and short, simple directions. That's all you need, and I had it on my face within ten minutes of it landing on my doorstep.

Picking Quia as the winner was easy. Each of the other four had a catch: no returns, trace amounts of the actives, single-use sheets, or a 10-minute scrub you rinse off. One came close, and I'll say so below. This one sat on my spots all night and they visibly softened. That's rare in this category.

MY VERDICT

If you want the full active set sealed on for 8 hours in a mask gentle enough for sensitive skin, the Quia Turmeric & Kojic Acid Overnight Mask is the one I keep reaching for.

It works out to $29.98 a tube on the Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal, it arrives in 1-3 business days, it's the only product here with a 60-Day Risk-Free Trial, and it holds a 4.8 rating from 13,851 reviews. That's why it lands at number one. Give it six weeks and wear your SPF.

The button below takes you to Quia's page, where you can read the rest of the details and check current pricing. The Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal was still live last time I looked, so it's worth a quick check before it ends.

The medicube Kojic Acid Turmeric Overnight Wrapping Mask came in second, and only just. It is the closest thing to a twin of the Quia mask in this roundup, and it is the cheapest per tube. I went back and forth on this ranking for a good week.

Put the two side by side and they look like sisters: the same kind of gold squeeze tube, the same 75 ml (2.53 fl oz) size, the same routine. You brush the yellow-gold gel on as your last step at night, away from your brows, hairline, eyes and lips, let it dry about 15 minutes, sleep in it, then peel it from the edges or rinse with lukewarm water. medicube names kojic acid, turmeric, vitamin C and collagen as the actives, and the tube also says retinol. Turmeric extract and niacinamide sit high on the full ingredient list. The named actives read very close to Quia's.

Comfort was fine once it set. Getting it to set took a while: on my face it stayed tacky for closer to 20 minutes, so I sat up with a book until my finger stopped sticking to it. A thin coat tore into little bits in the morning. A thicker coat came off in one sheet, which empties the tube faster.

On mask mornings my skin looked brighter and felt soft, and after about three weeks at medicube's suggested 3-4 nights a week, the spots on my cheekbones looked a little softer. medicube says uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation improved by 24.7% after 3 days and hydration by 66.8% after one use, but it gives no sample size or method. Kojic acid sits near the end of the ingredient list, after EDTA, with no percentage published.

The review picture is thinner. It has 4.66 from 130 reviews on medicube.us, but only 3.6 from 55 at Ulta. Several reviewers with acne-prone skin say it broke them out, some describe a burning feeling, and others say it dries slow and sticky, enough that a few reach for a hair dryer. One reviewer got just 6-8 uses out of a tube.

It is the cheapest tube in this roundup: $24 on medicube.us, $48 for a 2-pack with a free brush, or about $20.90 at Ulta. What cost it first place is the safety net. medicube takes no returns or exchanges, only damaged or defective items within 30 days, and shipping is $6.99 on orders under $80, with 3-7 business days to arrive. A near-twin, and a fair second.

In third place is the medicube Kojic Acid Turmeric Gold Jelly Gel Mask. Same brand, different format: this is a single-use gel sheet mask, one 28 g (0.98 oz) sheet per pouch, cut into an upper and a lower half. It goes on gold and turns clear as it sinks in. When you take it off, you pat the leftover serum into your skin.

Kojic acid and turmeric are named on the front of the pouch, next to niacinamide 2%. The Korean ingredient list on the back gives the amounts: kojic acid at 10 ppm (0.001%) and turmeric root extract at 750 ppm (0.075%). Those are trace levels. The same list includes fragrance and retinol. On a dark-spot mask sold on those two names, that gap is why I scored its formula lowest of the five.

Putting it on is simple. You peel the film off each half, center the top half around your eyes and the bottom half around your mouth, and lie back. It felt cool and heavy on my face, with a perfumed smell I noticed for the first half hour or so.

How long to wear it depends on which medicube source you read: 3-4 hours or overnight on the product page, 1-4 hours in its FAQ, 1-3 hours on the English back label. medicube can't seem to settle on an answer. I did two hours on the couch one evening and a full night another time.

After the two hours my skin looked dewy and fresh, the glow I'd want before a dinner out. The night I slept in it, the bottom half had slid toward my chin by morning. medicube's own test claims elasticity +32.2%, texture +7.8% and hydration +74.5% after one use, with no sample size given. Over a box of four, my sun spots looked the same as when I started.

It costs $5.99 a sheet, or $24 for four, which saves nothing per sheet, and each sheet is one use. It holds 4.83 from 58 reviews on medicube.us. The only 1-star review is about the strong smell, and others call it heavy and sticky to sleep in. For a quick glow before an event, I'd use one. For dark spots it barely qualifies, and medicube only refunds damaged or defective items.

Number four is the KISS New York Bright Kojic Acid + Turmeric Overnight Hydrogel Mask, one full-face gel sheet in an orange pouch from KISS's new K-Beauty Series. You smooth it onto clean skin, leave it on at least 3 hours or overnight, and peel it off once it turns clear.

Kojic acid and turmeric are both named on the front of the pouch, along with the line "Tone-Perfecting Glow." On the full ingredient list, niacinamide sits high up, with panthenol, allantoin and adenosine further down, and I liked seeing that. Kojic acid is near the very end, and the only things after it are two dyes, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. KISS doesn't publish any percentages, so I can't tell you how much is in there.

Wearing it was easy. The gel felt cool and a little slippery going on, sat flat once I pressed it around my nose, and I read in bed for an hour before falling asleep in it. No fragrance is listed, and I couldn't smell any. Each morning it had turned clear and peeled off in one pull, and my skin looked dewy and rested.

Here's the catch: one sheet is one night. It's cheap, $3.74 a sheet on sale at Joe's Beauty (normally $4.99) or $16.99 for a box of 4 from KISS, which makes it the cheapest way to try anything in this roundup. KISS suggests 2-3 sheets a week, though, and fading the look of spots takes weeks.

Returns are tight. Joe's Beauty takes back unused items within 15 days, and sale items are excluded, so a sheet bought at $3.74 can't go back. KISS's own store takes unopened product within 10 days. Either way, once a pouch is open, it's yours.

The bigger gap is the track record. It's a new launch, so new I couldn't find a single customer review to check it against, which is why it scores so low on satisfaction. It's a nice, cooling sheet for the night before a big event. Kojic acid at the tail of the list, the yellow dyes and the one-night sheets keep it at number four.

Closing out the list is the KORA Organics Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Scrub + Mask, and it's here because readers kept asking about it. It comes in a gold 100 ml (3.38 fl oz) tube for $56 at Sephora, and it works two ways: massage it onto damp skin as a scrub, or leave it on for 5-15 minutes as a mask, then rinse.

KORA lists it as certified organic, vegan and cruelty-free, and it feels like a treat to use. The paste is gritty and orange-brown and smells strongly of peppermint. The scrubbing comes from pumice, rosehip and bamboo stem, plus papaya and lactic acid. Turmeric root extract sits in the middle of the ingredient list. There's no kojic acid in it at all.

I used it twice a week for a month, about ten minutes each time. It stung my cheeks for the first few minutes and left them pink for a while after rinsing, which KORA warns about. Afterward my skin felt smooth and looked brighter. My sun spots looked the same at the end of the month.

The reviews are glowing: 4.86 from 611 on KORA's US store, the biggest review base here after Quia's. In KORA's independent third-party study (2 uses a week for 2 weeks, self-assessed), 98% said texture improved, 94% said skin looked brighter and 89% said pores looked smaller. None of that is about dark spots.

That's my problem with it here. It's a rinse-off, so ten minutes later it's down the drain, and with no kojic acid, nothing stays on a spot overnight. It's also the harshest pick for sensitive skin, with pumice, lactic acid and essential oils like peppermint. Some reviewers mention stinging, burning or redness, and KORA adds a sunburn warning for the AHA.

At $56 for 100 ml, it's steep for something you rinse away 2-3 times a week, and KORA only takes back unopened product. Reviewers also mention the strong peppermint scent and that it stains white towels. I still like it as a weekly polish. On a list about fading the look of spots, a 10-minute rinse-off finishes fifth.

Thanks for reading my whole roundup of the Top 5 Overnight Masks for Dark Spots.

I used all five of these at night for weeks and took a photo in the same window light every week, so I couldn't kid myself about what was changing.

The Quia Turmeric & Kojic Acid Overnight Mask won, and I still use it. It keeps kojic acid, turmeric, vitamin C, niacinamide, hydrolyzed collagen and adenosine sitting on your skin for the full 8 hours you sleep. It was gentle on me every night, and on the Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal it works out to $29.98 a tube.

If you only try one mask from this list, make it this one. It comes with a 60-Day Risk-Free Trial (Quia asks you to use it consistently and send before-and-after photos), and the Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal is still running as I write this.

Softer-Looking Spots by Week 6

Evens Tone, Never Whitens

Gentle on Sensitive Skin

Think your spot serum is enough? It's gone by midnight. Quia holds 4.8 from 13,851 reviews

Dr. Hana Lee, MD, a dermatologist and Quia's co-founder, says she spent 15 years treating dark spots, and she formulated this mask herself. It's made in Korea and dermatologically tested, with no harsh preservatives or fragrances.

My cheekbones before and after eight weeks with the Quia mask

Kojic acid sealed on your dark spots for 8 straight hours

Once the Quia mask dries, it sits on your face as a thin, breathable film that holds everything under it in place. So the kojic acid stays on each spot for the full 8 hours you sleep, and that's the ingredient doing the fading: it works on the melanin that spots are made of. Niacinamide looks after the skin around them and evens the look of tone.

By week 8, the sun spots across my cheekbones looked softer and my tone looked more even. You can still see them up close. The film peels off every morning, the spots stay where they are, and they fade a little more each week.

Peeling the dried mask off in one piece in the morning

15 minutes to set, one clean peel in the morning

I brushed on a thin layer after the rest of my evening routine, skipping my brows, eyes and lips, and gave it about 15 minutes to set. After that it's a weightless film, and I'd forgotten it was there within minutes.

My pillowcase stayed clean for all eight weeks. In the morning I picked at one edge near my jaw and the whole film came away in one piece, which never gets old at 6 a.m. Rinse if you like, put on SPF, and you're done.

A woman with bright, even-looking skin in window light

Keep using it and your tone keeps evening out

Quia's point is simple: a serum is mostly gone a couple of hours after you put it on. A film you sleep in keeps the actives on your skin for all 8 hours, night after night, and that steady contact is what fades the look of dark spots over time.

You see brighter-looking skin the very first morning. The spots soften week by week after that. Once my tone looked even, I dropped to a few nights a week, and I wear SPF every day, because the sun will happily undo all of it.

I'm very impressed with this mask! I can definitely say I've noticed a difference in my skin since using it. I apply it to my face in my night routine as the last step. I put a thin layer on my skin and let it dry for about 15 mins, then go about my night. It stays put on my face while I'm sleeping.
